Partners in transforming the lives of our children

Our Partners

Harrisonburg, VA

—Down Syndrome Association Greater Richmond

We belong to the local Down Syndrome Association group.  They hold meetings, have workshops, and share resources.  They also have a facebook group for families.

James Madison University
Harrisonburg, VA

—James Madison University

We are very fortunate to live in a University town.  JMU offers many opportunities to support children and families including the incredible Overcoming Barriers and respite care.  Sadly, JMU also has a pre-school for 3-year-old children called YCP (Young Children’s Program), but this school did not have accommodations in place during covid that would allow our child to attend (when he did not wear a mask).

Harrisonburg, VA

—Harrisonburg City Public School

Harrisonburg City Public Schools provide both virtual and in-person therapy.  The city schools do provide accommodations for children with special needs – even during pandemics.  No child, regardless of ability, is excluded from an education, and accomodations are made if the child will not wear a mask.

Charlottesville, VA

—UVa Developmental Pediatrics Clinic

We are also very fortunate to live near another University (The University of Virginia) that offers a Down Syndrome Clinic.  We schedule routine checkups and specialized therapies every six months.

Harrisonburg, VA

—Harrisonburg/Rockingham Community Services Board

The Infant-Toddler Connection provided in-home physical and speech/language therapy until our son turned three.

Our Local Community

—Friends

Friends introduced us to their friends who had children with Down Syndrome.  Sitting down and talking with these families who had gone through it all before was incredibly helpful and comforting.  They pointed us to resources and connections.

Facebook
Internet

—Facebook Groups

There are a lot of Facebook Groups supporting Down Syndrome.  We belong to several including Parents of children with Down Syndrome.
